Retamar Castle

From the Arab domination in the twelfth century it remains as a testimony the castle-fortress, built on top of the village, to defend the treasure of its mines and called "Hins-al-madin" or Fuerte de la Mina, (Mine Fortress).

It was reinforced and expanded in 1467 by the Clavero (the Castle’s guardian and defender) of the Order of Calatrava, Lopez de Padilla. In the eighteenth century it was repaired on the outside and a tower was built, with clock and belfry, the only remainder that still today crowns the ruins of the castle in which base, the rock with veins of vermilion Cinnabar can be seen.

In its splendor, the construction, of lime and pebble masonry with brick lines where ashlars are intermingle in between, occupied a large area of the square that encloses it and included the surrounding houses.

This castle is included in the extensive network of fortifications that extended throughout the mountains nearby to serve as a place of surveillance and defense. After the last restoration works, it has a lookout offering an interesting panoramic view of the town and its surroundings.
