Gate of Charles IV

There is a walled enclosure, the Cerco de San Teodoro and Buitrones, made of stone and brick masonry. This wall has two doors, the old Puerta de Carros and the Puerta de Carlos IV.

Built in 1795, during the reign of Charles IV and declared of Cultural Interest in1992, it is the monumental entrance of the walled enclosure called Buitrones. It is one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture of Castilla-La Mancha, whose excellence exemplified the important product that was obtained within the walls.

It is attached and integrated into the masonry wall that encloses the metallurgy area of the mine. The structure is almost entirely made of brick, with two very similar facades but with some differences in the details. The external facade has a large segmental arch in its center with impost and outstanding keystone, flanked by two pairs of Tuscan pilasters and columns on pilasters. The architectural ensemble is crowned by a pediment highlighting the great royal coat of arms in the center of the tympanum. It is one of the few elements made of a material, limestone, different to brick.

Below, we find the Puerta de Carros, built in the seventeenth century, which was the main gate of the Buitrones enclosure until the Puerta de Carlos IV was built. Since then, it was walled with stone and incorporated into the wall. This is a very simple structure made of masonry blocks between buttresses and bricks regularization laying mortar. The span is solved by means of a trumpet segmental arch, with hip roof.

At present, the Puerta de Carros is restored, as well as a section of the path which goes to Seville, where the production of the mines of Almadén was sent to America.
